Thoughts on Starting Over

Hobby or Habit?

There is always room for improvement when it comes to espresso.  I love tweaking the process, watching YouTube videos of others making shots, and generally refining my techniques.  I do, however, tend to take things to extremes, and this is no exception.   I just found myself contemplating adding a $300.00 after-market temperature controller to our already $500+ espresso machine.  I do love toys.  And I do love great coffee.  And Jerry is very handy with all things electrical. So, maybe some day.  For today I’ll just enjoy the journey and not worry about the PERFECT espresso shot.

And then there’s my desire to learn latte art.  I have watched a lot of videos of people who have made latte art on the same machine we have, so I know it is possible.  I even found one guy who trains people to pour latte art using a drop of dishwashing liquid in cold water (see it here).  I tried it this morning with little success.  But it’s a lot cheaper than milk anyway, so I can afford to take my time.

I have learned some new terms like “temperature surfing” and “naked portafilter”…which are actually things that make this unattainable, mythical perfect shot at least closer to reality.  And, it’s fun to learn new stuff!  I’m a Coffee Geek for sure!
